Two of our biggest advocates Justin Guarini and Letitia Frye recently appeared on our first ever roundtable discussions and prior had never been aqainted.

4 days later Letitia attended an event last minute as to where she lives in Arizona and low and behold Justin was guest speaking for the evening.

Low and behold, Justin actually lives in Pennsylvania and got called last minute for the speaking engagement.

Serendipity at its finest.

Brining people together.

The Cost of Ignoring Mental Health in the WorkPlace

Nearly half of workers have been suffering from mental health issues since the Covid-19 pandemic began, at a significant cost to their well-being and potentially to their employer’s bottom line.

It’s a commonly accepted fact that adults spend roughly one-third of their lives at work.

That’s a significant amount of time, within which we are likely to experience a spectrum of physical and mental health.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 300million people suffer from depression globally

Depression and anxiety cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion each year in lost productivity.

USA.

Mental health and substance abuse cost US businesses between $80 and $100 billion annually. Another study showed that serious mental illness costs America up to $193.2 billion in lost earnings per year

Depression is thought to count for up to 400 million lost work days annually

UK.

Mental Health problems in the workplace cost the economy approximately £70 billion annually

91 million workdays are lost in the UK due to symptoms of mental illness

AUSTRALIA. (According to the Australian Human Rights Commission report)

A total of 3.2 days per worker are lost each year through workplace stress

Stress-related workers’ compensation claims have doubled in recent years, costing over $10 billion each year

Preliminary research shows that Australian businesses lose over $6.5 billion each year by failing to provide early intervention/treatment for employees with mental health conditions

Ways in which Managers can support Employees' Mental Health

Uncertainly can lead to very anxious times.

During this time of unprecedented times with COVID-19, and nobody know what is going to happen next.

We are seeing Mental Health related struggles rapidly on the increase.

As we navigate through these times, companies are likely to see employees struggle with depression, anxiety, burnout, trauma, and PTSD.

Leadership-capability-min.jpg

So what can Managers do?

MODEL HEALTHY BEHAVIOURS.

As a company don’t just say you support Mental Health.

Model it and lead by example.

COMMENCE A CULTURE CHANGE BY CHECKING IN

Make it intentional to make sure you are checking in with your employees and create a culture where it becomes normal for your team to do the same with each other.

With so many people working from home now during COVID'-19, this now more than ever is so important to implement.

Again, lead by example as a manager and don’t merely ask the generic ‘Are you OK’ ask some specific questions and ask your employees if they are needing additional support.

SHARE YOUR STORY

Through the Imperfectly Perfect Campaign, we have shown that as a leader, being honest about your mental health struggles opens the dialogue for employees to feel much more comfortable in talking with you about mental health challenges of their own.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY

Make sure you keep your team informed and try to always remove stress where possible to keep employee morale up.

INVEST IN EDUCATION / TRAINING OR SUPPORT

Now more than ever, you should prioritize proactive and preventive workplace mental health training for leaders, managers, and individual contributors.

Michelle Heaton & Husband Hugh Hanley get behind the @imperfectlyperfectcampaign global efforts and next week see’s an incredible chat with them both sharing their story on the ImperfectlyPerfect Podcast with founder Glenn Marsden and Rachael Newsham around Michelle’s battle having had to face some serious health challenges over the past few years, including undergoing a double mastectomy, breast reconstruction a hysterectomy and heart problems, and how she has managed to get through everything with the support of Hugh and her family. We find out how it affected Hugh being a partner watching his loved one struggle and how it impacted him also.

We are truly grateful for Michelle and Hugh getting behind our global efforts in changing the narrative around mental health and sharing their story which will help so many others out there that may be going through similar things.

A quick snippet of the chat with Michelle and Hugh telling us what it means being Imperfectly Perfect to them.

‘To me you have to allow ourselves not to be perfect. Because I always wanted to be perfect, to be the best I can be, and I still do want to be the best I can be and do and the best mum. But I’m never going to be right. Because no-one is right. Nobody is perfect and the more that we understand that and give ourselves a break the better we will be.’ - @wonderwomanshel

‘For me, it is around trying to be the perfect husband. Help Michelle and be her strength because, like she said she has an awful lot of health issues going on there and she’s been through for the last 10 years so much health struggles like hysterectomy, mastectomy, heart surgery, a pancreas issue. That’s a lot to take in, in 10 years for one person plus giving birth to two children. So for me personally, it’s trying to be a perfect husband, a good husband.’ @hughhanley

I have jumped onto the Imperfectly Perfect Campaign run by the very talented Glenn Marsden.

It is work like this that will chisel away at the stigmas build up around mental health especially within men. His unforgiving images cast a light over an important darkness in men that needs to be seen.

Being raised in an Australian masculine culture your often told “you’ll be right” and “don’t be a pussy”, iv felt myself and I’m sure its the same for a lot of other young men a sense of embarrassment for having a feeling that shows vulnerability.

The feeling is bad enough isn’t it? Let alone a sense of shame for having it on top of it.

Thats why we need to break down this built up world of bravado and show everyone, being vulnerable and brave enough to voice it, is truly masculine in its own beautifully feminine way.

Growing up with the world of social media your shown so many perfectly illustrated lives or the other side of the coin, constant saddening truths.

Where is the middle ground? When have you seen a post of someone saying “oh I’m feeling a little anxious and sad for some reason today”?

I think its these everyday trepidations that build up on us.

This is why I think its so important to check in with yourself and others when feelings arise. It could take a simple word from a loved one that can turn us away from the thought. Better to be the self evolving fool that asks the question, then to sit within the thought for however long your willing to hold onto it. It’s absolutely fine to not be ok.. it’s all part of the ride. “I wanted to write down exactly what I felt, but somehow the paper remained empty..... .....and I could not have described it any better” - Tim Franklin
