Professional Athlete

The Olympics and Mental Wellbeing: A Deep Dive into the Pressures Faced by Professional Athletes

The Olympics, a global stage where athletes showcase their peak performance, is often seen as the pinnacle of sporting success. However, beneath the glory and medals lies a complex and often overlooked issue: the mental wellbeing of professional athletes.

We just saw recently, Australian boxer Harry Garside share that he "felt like a failure" after a shock first-round exit after going down to Hungarian Richard Kovacs in the mens 63.5kg event despite receiving overwhelming support and admiration from his country.

Garside's candidness highlights the immense pressure athletes not only face but the pressure they can at times put on themselves.

The Burden of Expectations

Professional athletes, especially those competing at the Olympics, carry the weight of their own expectations along with those of their coaches, families, and nations. Any experience like Harry’s is a poignant reminder that even when an athlete performs admirably, they may still grapple with internal battles of self-doubt and perceived inadequacy.

The Pressure Cooker Environment of the Olympics

The Olympics amplify the already intense pressure faced by athletes. The global spotlight, the weight of national pride, and the personal drive to excel create a "pressure cooker" environment. Athletes often undergo rigorous training, strict diets, and a relentless pursuit of perfection, all while managing the psychological stress of competition.

Harry Garside's recent reflections shed light on this reality. Despite his achievements, Garside admitted to feeling like a failure for not meeting his own high standards. This mindset is not uncommon among elite athletes, who often set extraordinarily high expectations for themselves, sometimes at the expense of their mental well-being.

The Role of Support Systems

The response to Garside's openness from Australia—marked by love, admiration, and support—illustrates the crucial role that supportive environments play in an athlete's mental wellbeing. Positive reinforcement from the public, along with professional support around him, can make a significant difference in an athlete's ability to cope with any pressure.

As the world celebrates the achievements of Olympic athletes, it's crucial to remember the human side of these competitors. By fostering a culture that prioritises mental wellbeing as much as physical prowess, we can help ensure that athletes thrive both on and off the field.

Changing The Game with Campbell Johnstone

In the world of rugby, where strength, determination, and camaraderie reign supreme, one remarkable individual, Campbell Johnstone, has emerged as a beacon of hope and inspiration for both the sport and the LGBTQ+ community. His story is a testament to resilience, authenticity, and the power of breaking barriers.

Campbell Johnstone's name resonates within New Zealand rugby circles as an All Black and a Canterbury Crusaders rugby star in the early 2000s. His prowess on the field was undeniable, and he left an indelible mark on the sport. But it was in early 2023 that Campbell's name transcended the boundaries of the rugby pitch and became a symbol of courage and progress worldwide. Why? Because Campbell Johnstone made history by becoming the first-ever openly gay All Black.

Campbell's journey is not just about rugby; it's a story of self-discovery, authenticity, and unwavering determination. In an environment where stereotypes and traditional norms often cast a shadow, Campbell's decision to step out as his authentic self was nothing short of revolutionary. He defied conventions and chose to live his truth.

In doing so, Campbell Johnstone became a source of inspiration not only for fellow athletes but for countless individuals facing the daunting challenge of embracing their own identities. He has shown the world that one's sexual orientation should never limit their dreams or ambitions, and that authenticity is a force to be reckoned with.

Campbell's story is a testament to the transformative power of authenticity. It's a reminder that embracing who you are, regardless of societal expectations, can lead to greatness. His journey encourages us to break free from the constraints that may hold us back, to be bold, and to pursue our dreams with unwavering determination.

As an openly gay All Black, Campbell Johnstone has redefined the landscape of rugby, dismantling barriers, and opening doors for future generations. His legacy extends beyond the try lines and scrums; it's a legacy of acceptance, inclusivity, and hope.

In a world that sometimes lacks understanding and compassion, Campbell's story is a shining beacon that reminds us to stand tall, live authentically, and strive for excellence without fear of judgment. He is a role model, a hero, and a symbol of progress, reminding us all that we can be true to ourselves and make history in the process.

Campbell Johnstone's journey is a story of triumph, resilience, and above all, being unapologetically true to oneself. His journey is one of hope for the future, a future where acceptance and authenticity are celebrated.

International Rugby Union Player Psalm Wooching shares his story on the ImperfectlyPerfect Podcast

‘Imperfectly Perfect means accepting who you are as a person. They always say, you know, the cliche thing, it’s ok not to be ok. That phrase, and I think you have to put yourself and others in a category of nobody is perfect. No matter how or even your biggest person you look up to, the guy who makes the most money in the world. Nobody’s perfect. They are all dealing with something and you have to just embrace that. If you are down and low or happy and high, you just got to embrace that. Everyday is a new day, everyday is a day to take advantage and whether it’s that low day or a high day just know you can get through it and you don’t have to be perfect’. @psalmwooching

An upcoming episode on the @imperfectlyperfect_podcast with International rugby union player, Psalm who played for the United States men's national team, also played for the San Diego Legion in the Major League Rugby and previously played for the USA Selects and Seattle Saracens and now plays for the Rouen Normandie Rugby club in France.

An incredible conversation with founder Glenn Marsden, co-host @rachael_newsham and Psalm discussing everything from a disciplined mindset to achieve what you set out to get to the importance of taking time out when you need to. With what we are seeing in the olympics at the moment with Mental Health being put before profession, Psalm leads from the front as a true advocate for making sure your mind is just as healthy as your body physically to keep playing or competing within the sports arena and shares his own personally story in this episode.
